San Francisco, CA
I started drawing when I was 3 and painting when I was 5. I graduated from San Francisco State University with a BFA in painting/Sculpture in 1989. Upon my graduation, I did costume design/ infrastructure, set design, and scenic painting in New York for 5 years. I returned to San Francisco in 1995 and went into new media graphics. All of these experiences have influenced my fine art scale, palette, subject matter, and medium. I have been painting full time since 2001.
I try to recognize beauty in what is traditionally considered repugnant: industrial cityscapes, abandoned factories, bad acid trips, or Pam Grier wielding a pistol on the backside of L.A. I like to have a narrative about the future, with only subject matter from the past. The desolate landscape that depicts the erosion of our culture and our environment begs a new iconography or pantheon to give spirit, faith, and hope to the isolated populous. Who better to put our faith in than the heroes and anti-heroes born in this time of cultural upheaval. Nostalgia is the dope of isolation, pop icons our communion. I'm searching for the beauty in life, a pretty color in a toxic sunset. I work in oil, acrylic, steel, Photoshop, video, & digital photography.
